Volcanoes and the Protection of Health

This CD provides images of volcanic eruptions, expert opinions, technical and scientific information, as well as lessons learned from past emergencies to illustrate the principal health risks from volcanic eruptions and basic measures to reduce the potential threats. It comes accompanied by a teaching guide with the most important technical aspects presented in the video and is divided into two parts and with a total duration of 36 minutes.

Jamaica, St Vincent and Dominica

Disaster Reports No. 2

In 1979, the Caribbean was affected by three consecutive disasters. In April, authorities in St. Vincent were obliged to relocate 20% of the population of the island due to an eruption of the Soufriere volcano. In July, strong floods caused serious damages in Jamaica, and in September, Dominica suffered severe damages from Hurricane David. This report provides a summary of the most relevant health aspects, especially pointing out the infectious diseases’ aspects after natural disasters.
