This report presents the devastating effects of hurricane Gilbert (September 1988) in Jamaica, among which some of the most profound damages occurred in 90% of the health care facilities. In addition to these effects, this report analyzes from the health sector perspective the preparedness and response activities, the health surveillance system, the refugee situation and lessons learned. Ultimately, it provides great technical information for confronting other similar future emergencies.
